    PREVENTION

Providing education and awareness of substance use and abuse is imperative to promoting the academic success, and health and well-being of our students. Teens and brain development research show that the human brain is not fully developed until age 25. Research also demonstrates the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the developing brain. “Alcohol kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined. It is a factor in the three leading causes of death for 15-24-year-olds: accidents, homicides, and suicides” drugfreeworld.org.  Our goal is to increase awareness regarding child and adolescent substance use, increase awareness of the harmful consequences of substance use, and promote prevention activities that reduce the prevalence of substance use.

    INTERVENTIONS

    Substance Abuse Case Managers:

    • Conduct substance use assessments for students suspended for drug or alcohol-related offenses and refer for intervention services.
    • Provide consultation and intervention services for students who have not committed a drug or alcohol-related offense but are at high risk for drug and/or alcohol involvement.
    • Substance abuse referrals can come from school-based administrators, school counselors, teachers, parents, etc.
