Music & Performing Arts

  • The Department of Applied Learning believes the Arts positively impact local communities and are critical to a complete education. Supporting young people in creative learning and artistic endeavors ensures they will be more engaged and enriched in all aspects of their lives. The presence of the arts and artists in society is a vital component of a functioning democracy.

Within our schools, Music Education provides the tools needed so that students can not only master the art of music-making, they can also become creators of emotion and expression.  Mastering the art of music-making also benefits physical and cognitive development.  Dexterity and coordination are necessary skills developed to perform on a musical instrument, and the act of learning and reading music develops the same skills needed to learn a foreign language and to comprehend high order academic subjects.

Theatre is the only art form with the potential to combine all of the Fine Arts: music, dance, acting and visual art. Our pre-professional Theatre curriculum includes acting, directing, arts administration, technical theatre, and principles of design. Theatrical makeup, costume, lighting, and scenic design all combine script analysis, technical skills, and visual art techniques to make Theatre an all-encompassing curricular experience. Broward County Public Schools is committed to providing world-class theatre education to all students and strives to ensure access to the opportunities and cultural resources necessary for cultivating skilled creators, communicators, and collaborators through the Arts.

With the goal of launching them into the 21st century, the SMART Project elevated our Music & Performing Arts programs to new heights by purchasing new musical instruments across the district in addition to funding state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment to ensure our schools are home to the most competitive music and theatre programs in the state.
