Broward County Public Schools esports in education provides new opportunities for students to engage in their school community and foster teamwork.
BCPS esports at Broward County Public Schools started in 2022 and is now in various schools. The main videogame used is "Rocket League". Rocket League is a fast-paced game of cars playing soccer and has an ESRB rating of E (for Everyone). Each match is between two-five minutes, with two teams of three players each and a sudden death overtime occurs if the match ends in a tie.
The popularity of esports continues to grow nationwide. Research shows it helps to build spatial reasoning skills, which assist students in STEM. It is also an inclusive sport, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose to support social and emotional growth. The Applied Learning Department plans on expanding the esports initiative across 100% of secondary grade schools by 2025.
