The African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), a Broward County Library located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida opened to the public on October 26, 2002, and became the third library of its kind in the United States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. This 60,000 square-foot public library is extraordinary for the quantity and rarity of books on Black history and culture and for books written by people of African descent. The library houses more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts and documents. In addition to these resources, it features permanent and traveling exhibits, conference rooms, a 5000 square-foot gallery, a 300-seat state-of-the-art auditorium and a computer training lab. The Youth Services Section features a special collection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the Ashley Bryan Art Collection - a collection of original art work by children's book illustrators of African descent. Libraries similar to AARLCC are the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, and the Auburn Avenue Research Library in Atlanta.
