Best Practice Recommendations (DPI)

  • INTERNAL BCPS REQUIREMENTS FOR DEPARTMENT/DIVISION LANDING PAGES

    Overview

    • All department/division landing pages must include a brief description of the department/service/program (not more than 2-3 paragraphs).
    • App Name should be displayed below any top-level page graphic to appear with descriptive text.
    • This should be the top level item for each department/service/program (not Welcome, not Home, not the name of the department as the name of the department is at the top of the left-side column).
    • This should be the first link in the left side navigation.

    Contact Information

    • Title: Contact Us
    • Location: Top-most right sidebar

    ADDITIONAL Bb GUIDELINES & RECOMMENDATIONS

    Layout

    • Start by changing to the page layout when attempting to accommodate diverse types (icons + text) or directions (horizontal + vertical) of content.
    • Two and three-column layouts are strong choices when displaying lists of files or PDFs.

    Graphics

    • Avoid overwhelming the reader with very large rotator displays in conjunction with large amounts of content
      • Use a colored background on graphics in the rotator rather than white; without that the imagery lacks defined edges and blends in with the page background
    • Match the aesthetic of your imagery to your overall web design. This includes colors, fonts, shapes, etc.
      • For example, the very rounded corners on the icons on this page don’t really tie in to the overall web design. Square corners may look more cohesive.
    • Consider creation of 6 new graphics at bottom of page:
      • They do not appear to reflect BCPS branding, several are white background, and appear dated/flat
      • Either new graphics should be designed that are in line with Broward branding, use pure photography, or remove them entirely and use Site Shortcut links in right sidebar
    • Avoid icons over 100x100 as they can convey outdated styling

    Styling / App Selection

    • Use background shade styling to break up the page
    • Use built-in Editor Styles to provide visual interest within and between paragraphs
    • Avoid use of Accordion app for full-width columns unless there is significant value (e.g. reduces page scrolling for very large amounts of text, etc.)

    Social Media

    • Feeds display best in narrower right-side sidebars
    • Use built-in social media apps to attract users
