Adult General Education (AGE) program:
Florida’s adult education system includes a range of instructional programs that help adults get the basic skills they need to be productive workers, family members, and citizens. The major program areas are Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult High School (AHS), GED® Preparation, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). These programs emphasize basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and English language competency. Adult education programs also help adult learners gain the knowledge and skills they need to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
Adult Education students develop a career pathway portfolio utilizing MyCareerShines online career planning tool. Students explore post-secondary institutions, financial aid, employment/soft skills, and resume development. This platform is supported by the Florida Department of Education to assist adult education students in the selection of Career Pathways.
Adult education programs are available to individuals that:
- Are 16 years or older.
- Are not enrolled or required to be enrolled in secondary school.
- Do not have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Want to learn to speak, read, and write the English language.
Integrated English Language and Civics Education (IELCE):
The Adult ESOL program assists immigrants and other individuals who are English language learners in: improving their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in English, mathematics skills and provide an understanding of the American system of Government, individual freedom, and the responsibilities of citizenship. In addition, the Adult ESOL program is designed to lead to attainment of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent; and transition to postsecondary education and training; or employment.
The Adult Education and Family Literacy Act supports English language learners in the attainment of the following goals:
- Improve their literacy skills in English
- Obtain knowledge and skills for employment and economic self-sufficiency
- Participate in the educational development of their children
- Improve economic opportunities for their families
- Understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship
