Why a Building Permit?
Building permits provide the means for the Code Officials to protect persons by reducing the potential hazards of unsafe construction. Building permits provide a means for Code Officials to inspect construction to ensure that minimum standards are met and appropriate materials are used.

What is the Purpose of a Building Permit?
Assure safe construction. Permits allow for the enforcement of the codes that have been adopted as law to protect the Public Health, Safety, and Welfare.

What is a Building Permit?
A building permit is a license that grants legal permission to start construction of a building project.

When will my permit expire?
Work must begin and have an approved inspection within 6 months after issuance or the permit will expire. Once the permit is considered active, an approved inspection must be received within every 180 days to keep the permit from expiring.

How do I schedule an inspection?
To request inspections, call (754) 321-4800. Inspection requests may be faxed into the office using an Inspection Request Form.
Please provide the following information:
- A 24-hour request notice is required and inspection request are to be called in by 3:00 PM.
- Permit Number
- General Contractor, subcontractor or job contact and their telephone number.
- Project number, facility name, date and inspection discipline. (structural, architectural, civil, electrical mechanical, plumbing)
- Inspection type, scope of work to be inspected, site location, building or room number (if applicable)
- All failed inspections must be called in as a re-inspection.

What are the hours of inspections?
Inspections may be performed between the hours of 7:00 am and 4 p.m. and are not time specific. The inspector decides in which order they will accomplish their inspections. Many of the inspectors cover a very large area and they must utilize their time efficiently. Requesters may call the inspector in the morning to arrange a specific time.
