ESOL Curriculum & Materials satisfies one of five State course requirements for Category I ESOL Endorsement and is designed as a study of instructional curricula and strategies for teachers of English Language Learners. Participants will identify and select various instructional materials that will meet the educational needs of English Language Learners and promote academic achievement for all students.
Duration: 8 weeks

Week 1: The Big Picture: English Language Learners (ELLs) in Context
Week 2: Setting the Scene: Learning Systems & Environment
Week 3: Beginning with the End in Mind: Goals, Objectives, and Learning Tasks
Week 4: Know Your Players: Differentiating for ELLs
Week 5: Input: Contextualization for Comprehension
Week 6: Process: Deep Understanding & Critical Thinking
Week 7: Process: Deep Understanding & Critical Thinking Continues
Week 8: Output: Many Paths to the DestinationSpecific Objectives
Participants will:
- Plan for integrated standards-based ESOL and language sensitive content instruction
- Create supportive, accepting, student-centered classroom environments
- Plan differentiated learning experiences based on assessment of students' English and L1 proficiency and integrating ELLs' cultural background knowledge, learning styles, and prior former educational experiences
- Plan learning tasks for particular needs of students with limited formal schooling (LFS)
- Plan for instruction that embeds assessment, includes scaffolding, and provides re-teaching when necessary for individuals and small groups to successfully meet English language and literacy learning objectives
- Select and adapt culturally responsive/sensitive, age-appropriate, and linguistically accessible materials
- Select and adapt a variety of materials and other resources including L1 resources, appropriate to ELL's developing English language and literacy
- Select technological resources (e.g. Web, software, computers, and related media) to enhance instruction for ELLs of diverse backgrounds and at varying English proficiency levels
Implementation
Evidence that course content has been transferred to daily instruction might include:
- knowledge of various District and State administered assessments for ELLs
Materials
In order to complete this online course, participants need to be able to access web-based content, including multimedia presentations, professional articles, and various interactive websites.
Inservice
- complete all assignments
- participate each week in the Discussion Area
- score at least 80% or higher on post test
To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.
Prerequisites
Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course:
- an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software
- the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
- the ability to download and install files from the Internet
- an up-to-date antivirus software package
