CAT I - Applied Linguistics

  • Applied Linguistics satisfies one of five State coursework requirements for Category 1 and is designed as a comprehensive linguistic study of American English and factors that effect the instruction of English as a Second Language. Participants will be prepared to plan and implement instructional activities that will meet the educational needs of English Language Learners and promote academic achievement for all students.

    Week 1: Language, Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics
    Week 2: Language Learning and Language Acquisition
    Week 3: Phonology- The Sound of Language
    Week 4: Morphology- The Formation of Words
    Week 5: Semantics- The Study of Meaning
    Week 6: Syntax- Rules for Combining Words, Phrases, Clauses, and Sentences
    Week 7: Language Skills: Listening & Speaking
    Week 8: Language Skills: Reading & Writing

    Specific Objectives

    Participants will:

    • determine and use appropriate instructional methods and strategies for individual and groups, using knowledge of first and second language acquisition theories
    • select and develop appropriate ESOL content according to student levels of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, taking into account: (1) basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS), and (2) cognitive academic language proficiency skills (CALP) as they apply to the ESOL curriculum
    • analyze student language and determine appropriate instructional strategies, using knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and discourage
    • categorize basic concepts of phonology as they apply to language development, e.g., stress, intonation, juncture, and pitch
    • determine phonemic characteristics in a given word, e.g., consonants, blends, vowels, diphthongs
    • identify structural patterns in a given word such as root words, affixes, compound words, and syllables
    • compare the characteristics of idiomatic expressions, slang, and standard American English
    • determine principles of morphological interference between English and other languages
    • analyze the structure of various types of English sentences
    • recognize methods of grammatical analysis: traditional, structural, and contemporary
    • determine principles, characteristics, and terminology of current first and second language acquisition theories
    • apply ESOL instructional strategies for specific learning styles

    Implementation

    Evidence that course content has been transferred to daily instruction might include:

    • demonstration of the background and requirements of the 1990 META Consent Decree to ensure compliance
    • demonstration of the teacher's role and responsibilities to ensure that ELL students achieve at their highest potential
    • demonstration of second language acquisition by implementing instructional programs that address the needs of second language learners
    • participation in the completion and updates of the English Language Learners Student Education Plan to include the programmatic assessment and academic placement of ELL students

    Materials

    In order to complete this online course, participants need to be able to access web-based content, including multimedia presentations, professional articles, and various interactive websites.

    Inservice

    • complete all assignments
    • participate each week in the Discussion Area
    • score at least 80% or higher on post test

    To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.

    Prerequisites

    Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course:

    • an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software
    • the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques
    • the ability to download and install files from the Internet
    • an up-to-date antivirus software package
