Spoken Word
  • The Spoken Word Poetry Club at Sheridan Tech is a group of individuals who look for ways to speak their minds through the arts. The club refers to themselves as "Beowulves" because "they came to conquer." Every student in the club plays a role, whether it is writing a group piece or giving advice on someone’s personal poem. Poetry truly is a safe space for these students. The club meets throughout the year and their work culminated in participating in a poetry competition in Spring called “Louder Than A Bomb, FL.” High schools from Homestead to Jacksonville compete, putting their most skilled poets to the mic. Our club is always looking for more students to join and express themselves through poetry. A club fee of $20, to cover the LTAB entrance fee, will be assessed for each member of Spoken Word.

We are partnered with bluapple Poetry & Jason Taylor Foundation to encourage performances at two local open mics; Lyrical Lounge & VoiceBox, as well as the nationally recognized Louder Than A Bomb poetry slam.

  • Night of Performances 2023

STHS hosted a Night of Performances, May 5, 2023. Performances featured the drama club, debate, and spoken word.

    Night of Performance

It’s a wrap. This Friday, Sheridan Tech’s Dramatic and Visual Arts Departments put on our first-ever Night of Performances to a packed house of over 200 families, friends, graduates, staff, and faculty. Students from Art Club, Spoken Word, Debate, and Drama came together to create a show which showcased their many talents and shared their love for the arts with the world. It was AMAZING. This production would not have been possible without the help of so many people spanning all three campuses. Thank you to our Director, Ms. Daniel, Assistant Director Ms. Sanchez, and all of the administration for their continued support. Our bookkeepers, Mrs. Wright, and Mr. Monpremier ensured that we had everything in place financially. The Construction and Energy department provided materials that helped us bring our stage to life. Our poster prints from the college gave us the means to publicize and advertise our night. The technology department gave our backstage crew the ability to prepare and provide sound equipment. Facilities ensured that our school looked beautiful to the public and prepared the cafeteria before and after the show, and the culinary department for the use of their equipment, which helped to make concessions a breeze. Everyone had a hand in making this dream a reality. It has been said that “The strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack”, and this pack has once again come together to make the impossible possible. We may not be on one campus, but we are indeed one family. Night of Performances was a night to remember. Here’s to continuing to showcase our phenomenal students and creating many more spectacular memories.

  • Louder Than A Bomb FL 2022

April 9, 2022, the Spoken Word Poetry Club competed in the Semifinal Round of a Poetry Slam called "Louder than a Bomb, FL." We had STELLAR performances from sophomore Christina, junior Roux, and junior Dansia. Senior Melody's poem earned high marks and was so memorable that the Executive Director of bluapple Poetry Network complimented her after the competition for her piece. Melody's scores were so high she represented STHS both individually as well as for the team in the Semis. Finally, our group poem was performed by freshman Elisha, sophomore Christina, and juniors Alexia and Danisa. Their performance was so good they earned a 10/10!

You are invited to the cafeteria this Thursday, April 14 at 10:00 a.m. to watch our students perform their poems. This is something you don't want to miss!

  • Past Accomplishments 2015 - 2019

    Danasia King

2021- The group faced challenges due to the pandemic and still came out on top, earning the entire team a spot in LTAB’S Semifinals. Special recognition for Samuel and Danisa who played an important role in the competition.

    Samuel Nathan

2020- In the year of the pandemic, our STHS poets proved they can overcome any obstacle. Each individual had to record themselves performing their poems and submit them to be watched and judged live. There was even a group piece where the students recorded it in their own homes and then edited it, so it is viewed as a group poem. Samuel Nathan progressed to LTAB’s Semifinals as an individual poet. His poem “Terms and Conditions” was a powerful piece against domestic violence.

2019- STHS’ Spoken Word Poetry Team “Benedictions” earned a spot in LTAB’s Semifinals.

2017- STHS had six individuals & 2 teams of poets compete. Tannesia gained respect for “Black Girl Magic.”

2016- Obey Mima auditioned as an individual poet and gained respect for her piece “Suicidal.”

2015- Sahara received a Blue Ribbon from the City of Davie for an MLK poem.
