  • "By the end of the eighth grade year, students are expected to read and comprehend literary nonfiction and literature, including stories, dramas, and poems at the high end of the grades 6–8 text complexity band, independently and proficiently. Students in these grade levels are also expected to write routinely over extended time frames (research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. They are expected to acquire and accurately use grade-appropriate, general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases. In grades 6-8, teachers continue to plan for lessons that are crafted using the balanced literacy approach model, to scaffold student understanding and mastery of the standards. Reading classes offered in the middle grades are intended to help striving learners build their skills through scaffold instruction and text at their instructional level, while still providing opportunities for students to grapple with complex text."-
