Visual and Performing Arts Electives

Band
Band is available to all students. In band, students will receive instruction on how to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students will participate in concerts during the school year. Students in Concert Band and Symphonic Band will also participate in various competitions.

Chorus
Chorus students will learn proper vocal production and technique, music reading skills, sight-singing skills, and performance skills. Chorus also offers opportunities for students to develop team building and leadership abilities. This is a performance-based class. Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required.

Art
Students learn to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art both on paper and on the iPad. Class projects include drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Yearbook
Students learn basic principles of yearbook production and develop skills that include writing copy, captions and headlines; digital photography; desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production of the yearbook and develop skills that include writing copy, captions and headlines; digital photography; desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production.

Speech and Debate
The purpose of this course is to develop students' oral communication skills. This will include learning and practicing a variety of speech formats, learning appropriate public speaking techniques, and using research and writing skills to support selected topics and points of view. Students in these courses must participate in after-school tournaments.

Computers - Orientation to Career Clusters (6th grade)
This course helps students identify different types of career pathways and the technology that goes with them. Students discover how to plan for their future careers, from academics to real world employment strategies. Students will also get an opportunity to get certified in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Digital Discoveries (7th grade)
Digital Discoveries is a computer science course that empowers students to create authentic artifacts and engage with
Computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem-solving, and fun. In addition to fundamental computer information, the content includes but is not limited to digital technologies associated with problem-solving, computer components, internet safety and ethics, web development, animations and games, basic programming techniques, and physical computing. Students will also get certified in Microsoft Word and Excel during this course. -
Foundations of Web Design Honors (8th grade - HS credit)
This technology course is designed to provide students with opportunities to acquire and apply foundational skills related to web design. Students learn basic code in the HTML and CSS language, then apply them in Visual Studio. Students also have an opportunity to get industry certification in HTML and CSS (Digital Took is Visual Studio).

Global Perspectives
Global Perspectives focuses on the important skill of Critical Thinking. Students conduct in-depth research on relevant topics of their choosing as well as studies of current topics selected based on the Cambridge curriculum. Students in this course will develop outstanding transferable skills, including critical thinking, research and collaboration.

Cambridge Physical Education
This course is available for all grades. Cambridge Lower Secondary Physical Education is about learning to move and about moving to learn. Learners develop movement skills through a wide variety of age-appropriate physical activities, including games and team sports. Students will also develop important social skills while learning about leadership, collaboration, and fair play.

Physical Education
This course is available for all grades.This class is designed for students who enjoy high energy activities and can work with others on teams of different sizes. This class will place emphasis on several sports, including basketball, volleyball, soccer, & flag football.

Gardening
This course is available for all grades. Students in our gardening class will work with our Technology Empowered Agriculture (TEA) Garden Food Forest. Students will learn why and how to sustainably grow edible food in their neighborhood. This course will emphasize both growing culturally relevant native plants and trees, while connecting agriculture and technology. Students will work in the garden each day.

Peer Counseling
Peer Counselors are a cross-section of students who act as helpers and active listeners for their fellow students. The course curriculum focuses on prevention. It addresses a multitude of social, individual, school, and family concerns and has a focus on violence and substance abuse prevention issues.
