Founded in 2001, Kiada is an organization that recognizes young ladies of good academic standards who want to be distinct and serve as role models for their peers. The main goal of this organization is to teach and promote positive self-awareness, respect of self and others, leadership skills, and sisterhood. By incorporating all of these goals, Kiada has continued to de velop a distinguished group of young ladies that depict the qualities of respect, responsibility, leadership and sisterhood. In an effort to ensure that Kiada qualities are established, the young ladies participate in bonding activities, community service projects, fundraising activities, weekly meetings and panel discussions that covers the topics of responsibility, leadership, sisterhood, as well as, personal and social wellbeing. In an effort to address literacy in urban communities, Kiada has established its first Book Club, which began January 2011.
History
Kiada is a Swahili (West African) term that means “distinct”. Founded in November of 2000, by Ms. Bridgett Leday, Kiada sought to recognize young ladies who wanted to be distinct and different from their peers. Kiada quickly gained the support of faculty, staff, and administrators and continues to rank among the most prestigious organizations at Blanche Ely High School.
The primary goal of this organization is to teach and promote positive self-awareness, respect of self and others, leadership skills, and sisterhood. WE want to develop a distinguished group of young ladies who exemplify the qualities or respect, responsibility, and leadership.
KIADA POEM: “A Lady of Distinction”
As I walk by, you may ask, “Who am I?”
I say
“Can’t you see the dignity I carry
By holding my head high
Without a sigh?”
It’s shown by the way I walk, the way I talk
And how I strive to be on top!
I’m a distinct lady, A “lady of distinction,” that’s me.
My ambition is what keeps me focused on achieving my
dreams.
No one can put me down or make me frown.
I am respectful, disciplined and sophisticated.
You wonder who am I?
I am a distinct lady.
A “lady of Distinction,” that’s me!
