Everglades High houses an innovative program to prepare students for a career in firefighting. The three-year curriculum includes the Fire Academy Program and emergency medical training. During the twelfth grade year, cadets who are at least 18 years old can earn industry certification in level 1 firefighting.  This certification exam includes a live burn as well as a written component.  Cadets who earn this State of Florida certification can progress to a level 2 academy immediately after high school.

Students enrolled in the Academy have an eye on careers in the fire service. They not only undergo rigorous training at school, but they can also take part in the City of Miramar Firefighter Cadet training program.  This provides opportunities for hands-on learning as well as community service hours.

Fire Cadets are exposed to numerous opportunities when first joining the program, but as they get closer to high school graduation the pressure to master fire rescue techniques becomes evident.

The Firefighter Academy at Everglades High School is a joint venture between Everglades High School (EHS) and the City of Miramar Fire Department.   All of the courses are taught by fire fighters from the City of Miramar Fire Department. The academy is a 3-year program that will prepare cadets for entry into postgraduate fire academies. Students must apply to be part of the EHS Fire fighter Academy.  In order to apply they must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, excellent attendance, and no disciplinary history. Students can apply for the program beginning in their 10th grade year.
