  • Clubs and organizations are a great way to help develop character and the skills that will benefit you in school, your career, and in life. Skills like commitment, leadership, effective communication, and being able to work successfully in a group all come from participating in a club or organization. Joining a club is a great way to make friends, develop leadership skills, and boost your college resumé.

  • Chess Club

    Our mission in Chess Club is to develop critical thinking skills and foster good sportsmanship. Students learn patience, flexibility and how to stay calm under pressure. Chess Club is run by Mrs. Smith, a 5th grade teacher, and a parent volunteer, Mr. J. Milian. It is open to sixty 2nd through 5th Grade students and is held after school on Wednesdays. In addition, there’s an opportunity to attend 2 tournaments per year.

    Silver Palms Elementary joined the Broward County initiative in 2018, becoming part of the largest program in the entire country. Guided by their coach, Mrs. Kavanaugh, our Speech and Debate students learn research skills, logic, organization of ideas, manipulation of language, assessment of audience, self-esteem, and engagement in world events. We offer this opportunity to approximately thirty, third through fifth-grade students, who take these valuable skills to three tournaments throughout the school year. We pride ourselves on the proficiency, perseverance, and creativity of our team members. 

  • Math Club

    The Math Club, advised by Ms. Barcz, is comprised of 12 fourth graders and 12 fifth graders. In order to be invited into the club, students must perform in the top 12 on a grade level test that is given in the Fall. The club meets twice a month during which time the students are taught problem-solving strategies that they use to solve higher-order thinking problems. The students work collaboratively in groups of four competing against each other and the clock for points as they solve complex math problems. Pre-Covid, a county-wide tournament, sponsored by the Broward Council of Teachers of Mathematics, has been held in the Spring. It is hopeful that the competition will be brought back soon.

    Silver Palms' Safety Patrols

    Silver Palm’s Safety Patrols are Fifth Graders that are committed to enhancing the safety of our students. Participating in this program provides the students with a chance to serve as a leader. The members should demonstrate leadership, maturity, reliability, ability to follow rules, punctuality, attendance, respect, and a desire to help others. Their job is that of a role model for all the students. Patrols assist students as they transition throughout the school, assist staff members and participate in projects that will help the school and the community.

    Patrols are selected towards the last quarter of 4th grade by their teacher. Safety Patrol students must exhibit high academic standards (Principal and A/B Honor Roll), commitment, sense of responsibility and a positive attitude towards their peers and school staff. These standards must be maintained in 5th grade to continue in the program.

  • Student Council

    Student council is made up of one representative per class from 3rd-5th grade. Council members help share students' ideas, interests, and concerns.  Advisors also help raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects and helping people in need. 
     
    We are currently cultivating a garden and this will help attract butterflies to our school. Our Kindergarten students will benefit from this each year while learning about the lifecycle. Rocks were painted in memory of MSD and added to our garden.
