| By Craig Dumas, Junior Intern, MargateNews.net
Margate Middle School won the 2016/17 Vocabulary Bowl, ranking No. 1 across North America in the Middle School Championship sponsored by Vocabulary.com. Margate Middle competed with over 38,000 schools in the United States and Canada, and mastered over 271,000 words to become the leading school in the Vocabulary.com challenge.
"There are many reasons why I like Vocabulary.com. The main one being that it helps me to become more prepared for an upcoming spelling or vocabulary test. The other reason is the contests. There is a contest for the most words mastered during that month. You can even earn cool prizes like, tablets, head phones, and gift cards," said Margate Middle School student Craig Dumas.
____________
Representatives from Vocabulary.com hosted a special awards ceremony Wednesday, May 24th at 2:30 p.m. to honor the school and students for this outstanding achievement. Officials presented a championship trophy and banner. In addition, the top 100 students were awarded individual medals celebrating their achievement. Margate Middle School is located at 500 NW 65th Avenue.
Vocabulary.com is a great online website that can help students study for vocabulary tests. The website allows you to create a list of vocabulary words to either study or learn, it will also help you to learn the definition of the word, especially if you do not know the meaning of the word. There is also a spelling bee on the website, so students can prepare themselves for an upcoming spelling test.

25 BCPS High Schools Rank as “America’s Most Challenging High Schools”
Congratulations to Cypress Bay High School, Pompano Beach High School and Nova High School for earning top 500 placement on “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” 2017 list by The Washington Post. Cypress Bay High is ranked 174, Pompano Beach High is ranked 237, and Nova High is ranked 306. The calculation measures how successfully schools provide access to advanced college-level coursework and challenge their students academically.
In all, 25 Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) high schools earned placement on “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list of more than 2,300, which annually evaluates all 23,000 U.S. public high schools. About 12 percent of high schools nationwide made the 2017 list.
Congratulations to our District 7 High Schools that made a strong showing in the national rankings:
According to The Washington Post, it uses a relatively straightforward formula to calculate the index score that serves as the basis for its rankings. It takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests given at a school each year and divides it by the number of seniors who graduated that year. The rankings also take into account the number of students receiving free and reduced lunch assistance.

(Excerpt from USA TODAY April 6, 2017)
With the end to the 2016-17 boys basketball season, USA TODAY High School Sports has named its seventh national champion of the decade.
So which has been the best program in the last seven seasons? We thought we’d find out by taking the final Super 25 rankings for the seasons that ended in 2011 through 2017 to provide a snapshot.
During that time, roughly 120 teams have finished in the final Super 25 in any year. Only three programs have appeared in all seven: Montverde Academy (Fla.), Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) and Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.).
Blanche Ely High School came in Number 10th in the Nation!
Congrats to the Coach and Student Athletes at Blanche Ely High School!

It was my pleasure to welcome some of the Scholar Debaters of Deerfield Beach Middle School to observe a School Board Meeting this morning.
This group of 22 sixth graders have been working on the various components of Debate across all of their content areas and have participated in weekly social/emotional learning lessons using LEAPS. This is a grant-funded program through the Community Foundation of Broward and our partners at the Urban League of Broward County as part of the “School is Cool 2.0 initiative”. This year, they have participated in field trips to the Courthouse, Weight of Words and an overnight College Tour to Tallahassee. While in Tallahassee, they were given guided tours of FAMU and FSU and had the opportunity to work with a debate coach. They also visited the Capital building, where they had the opportunity to sit in a Senate Debate and witness a bill being voted on by the Senate. After the Senate closed, the students participated in a mock debate on the Senate Floor with a Senator present.
Accompanying our students were:
Ryan Atwood, Assistant Principal, Deerfield Beach Middle School
Susan Shulman, Teacher, Deerfield Beach Middle School
Along with Ashley Beauchamp-Foreman and Kellianne Jordan, from the Urban League of Broward County -
We enjoyed their visit!

Denise Loglia, Confidential Secretary, Atlantic West Elementary School
More than 10 years ago, Denise Loglia began volunteering in BCPS. It was her loving and caring attitude, as well as her professionalism, that opened doors for her to become an employee and make her mark as a valued and trusted resource. “She exceeds expectations when it comes to her commitment and dedication,” said Principal Diane Eagan. She has strong work ethics, focuses on the details, and takes the initiative to provide solutions to any issue. Loglia is always looking for ways to streamline procedures and bring the best customer service to students, teachers and parents.
