BCPS Kicks Off New School Year

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomed nearly 250,000 students back to the classroom on Monday, August 12, 2024, making for an exciting start of the 2024/25 school year.

The first day of school included smiling faces as students returned to class, got reacquainted with their friends and met their teachers, administrators and support staff. At District high schools, BCPS implemented enhanced security measures with new pass-through metal detectors. The District will continue to refine procedures for using the new metal detectors, to reduce the long lines and wait times experienced on the first day, and we appreciate the support and patience of our students and families.

The school day began with a special visit to the Southwest Area Transportation Terminal by Broward County School Board members and BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. They greeted bus operators as they prepared for their routes and then boarded one of the zero emission electric buses to join students heading to West Broward High School.

Throughout the day, Superintendent Hepburn, School Board members and District leaders visited several schools, celebrating the return to school with students, teachers and staff. A highlight included enjoying lunch with students at Peters Elementary School, where they greeted the school’s youngest learners as they went through the cafeteria line and chatted with them at their tables. This school year, students at all District schools receive breakfast and lunch at no cost.

“Overall, it was an incredible first day of school. The energy and excitement were contagious,” Superintendent Hepburn said. “I am grateful for our dedicated teachers and staff, supportive School Board, and the partnership of our parents and families. Together, we are creating a bright future for our students.”

Following the school visits, a news conference was held to share highlights of the first day and successful launch of the new school year.
