Florida Civics Literacy Exam
Florida is committed to preparing students to become civically engaged and knowledgeable adults who make positive contributions to their communities. Florida students will graduate with sufficient knowledge of America's civics, particularly the principles reflected in the United States Constitution, so as to be capable of discharging their responsibilities as American citizens. On December 10, 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis asked Commissioner Richard Corcoran to implement a new civic literacy requirement for high school students.
To receive a standard high school diploma, Florida students must earn one credit in United States History and one-half credit in United States Government. As part of this new requirement, students enrolled in a United States Government course are now required to participate in the Florida Civic Literacy Exam prior to graduation. (See the FCLE Frequently Asked Questions for more information.)
Cooper City High School students currently enrolled in a United States Government course for the first semester will take the FCLE in December, as scheduled by their government classes. Second semester United States Government students will test in May 2023. Additional information is available at https://www.fldoe.org/civicliteracy/.
