Approximately 50 Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students have the unique opportunity to learn from bilingual law professionals about what it took them to practice law in the United States in the first Bilingual High School Conference.
WHO:
Bilingual High School and Law School Students, BCPS Teachers and Staff, Broward County Judges and Attorneys
WHEN:
Wednesday, January 22, 2020
TIME:
8:30 a.m.- noon (9 a.m. panel, 10 a.m. breakout session, 11 a.m. mock trial)
WHERE:
Fort Lauderdale High School, 1600 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33305
In collaboration with the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association, the Bilingual High School Conference was created to break down the language barrier to foster a mentorship environment between legal professionals and students in the hopes of introducing and possibly sparking an interest in a career in law. It also presents some of the real faces, real stories and real struggles of successful bilingual legal professionals in Broward County.
Students from Fort Lauderdale High School, Stranahan High School and South Broward High School will get to hear – in Spanish and English – the personal journeys of bilingual law students, practicing lawyers and judges in a panel discussion titled: The Challenges and Benefits of Bilingualism in the Legal Profession.
Following the panel discussion, students will participate in small breakout sessions led by Broward County legal professionals and law students from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law. These sessions will focus on the positive and negative aspects of bilingualism while studying and practicing law, the benefits and challenges of bilingual home life and provide students with the opportunity to participate in an interactive mock trial presentation.
The conference will be conducted in both English and Spanish.
