The Center for Mind-Body Medicine to Provide Mindfulness Guidance at Superintendent’s 2020 State of the District Address
August 2, 2020
Streamed live at becon.tv/sod
WHO:
Dr. James Gordon, founder and executive director of the nonprofit Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) in Washington, D.C.
WHAT:
At a time when educators everywhere are working to redefine what the new “back to school” looks like, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) continues to underscore the School Board’s commitment to stress-relief, trauma-healing, and community support as integral to academic excellence.
As BCPS prepares to begin the 2020/21 school year, Dr. Gordon instructs District and school leadership on the evidence-based techniques of the “Transformational Model of Self-awareness, Self-care, and Group Support” to help them better assist students, families and each other to overcome current life challenges.
WHEN:
Monday, August 3, 2020
9:05 a.m. – via live stream at becon.tv/sod
WHY:
BCPS administrators, teachers and staff are preparing for the start of an unprecedented school year, with students returning to classes via eLearning on August 19. As our community faces and evolves through the stressors related to the global pandemic, social injustices, racial inequities, and the social and emotional effects created as a result, mindfulness continues to provide a way to process and cope. In its third year of working with the BCPS Mindfulness Initiative, Dr. Gordon applies his research-evidence model to provide staff the tools needed to understand and successfully address these challenges.
Mindfulness is the intentional cultivation of moment-to-moment attention and awareness to enhance behavioral, academic and social-emotional learning to ensure life readiness. During this time of physical distancing, BCPS is utilizing mindfulness to support one another as we reduce stress, build resiliency and promote well-being.
