District Implements Metal Detectors at all High Schools to Enhance School Safety

  • Beginning on the first day of the 2024/25 school year, high schools across the District will be equipped with metal detectors at school entry points.  All students and visitors must pass through the metal detectors to enter the school.

Students will need to present their ID before being screened.  The new metal detectors are calibrated so students can pass through with their backpacks and other personal belongings.  They do not need to remove their shoes, empty their pockets or remove cellphones, keys, loose change or belts before passing through.

Some items, however, will set off an alert and must be placed on tables adjacent to the metal detectors to be screened by security staff.  These include laptops, umbrellas, musical instruments, large eyeglass cases and three-ring binders.  Students can collect such items after they have been screened.  Parents should remind their students to bring only necessary items and ensure they do not bring weapons or other prohibited items to school.

The School Board is implementing the metal detectors at all high schools to enhance school safety, underscoring a commitment to providing safe and secure learning environments for our students. These detectors, operated with the help of school administrators and security staff, add an extra layer of security at our high schools.

  • What is the purpose of the metal detector program?

The purpose of the metal detector program is to enhance school safety by installing walk-through metal detectors at all high school entry points across the District. This initiative, which began at two high schools over the summer, aims to provide an additional layer of security, ensuring a safer learning environment for students and staff. The rollout will continue throughout the upcoming school year, reflecting the School Board’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards.

  • Where will the metal detectors be placed?

The metal detectors will be placed at the entry locations of each participating school.

  • Will students need to remove their backpacks or common belongings?

No, students will not need to remove backpacks, cell phones, keys, metal on clothing, and other common belongings as these items will not cause an alert.

  • Which items will set off the metal detectors?

Items such as laptops, umbrellas, musical instruments, hard eyeglass cases, and aluminum baseball bats will set off an alert. These items must be placed on tables next to the metal detectors before entering and will be collected after screening.

  • What happens if a student sets off a screening alert?

If a student sets off a screening alert, they will be guided to a secondary screening station to be rescreened by security personnel before entering the school.

  • Are there accommodations for students with disabilities?

Yes, special accommodations will be available for students with disabilities. Parents and guardians should contact the school’s administration for details.

  • What are the consequences if a student is found with a weapon or other banned items?

Any student found in possession of a weapon or other banned items will be subject to disciplinary actions according to the Code Book for Student Conduct.

  • Who will assist students during the screening process?

Staff will be present at the metal detectors to assist students with the screening process.

  • How can parents and guardians support this safety initiative?
