  • Life Skills and Wellness (LSW) fosters skills that build confidence and support mental and emotional health. We are helping our students gain knowledge of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and resiliency.

These competencies provide life and employability skills that build confidence to support the well-being of our students, enabling them to overcome challenges. As outlined in Florida Statute 1003.42(n), these competencies help students work towards achieving goals both academically and socially as we prepare them for the 21st-century workplace.

  • Life Skills and Wellness Competencies in Broward Schools

Self-awareness - the ability to be aware of one's emotions, thoughts, behaviors, values, preferences, goals, strengths, challenges, attitudes, and mindsets and how these elements impact behavior and choices across contexts.

Self-management - the ability to manage one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations and to achieve goals and aspirations.  This includes the capacity to delay gratification, manage stress, and feel motivation and agency to accomplish personal and collective goals.

Relationship Skills - the ability to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships.  This includes the capacities to communicate clearly, listen actively, work collaboratively to problem solve, negotiate conflict, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed.

Responsible Decision Making - the ability to make caring and constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions.  This includes the capacity to consider ethical standards and safety concerns and to evaluate the benefits and consequences of various actions for personal, social, and collective well-being.

Resiliency - the ability to bounce back after challenges and tough times.  Resilience develops when we experience challenges and learn to deal with them in positive ways.

There are different ways to identify the successes and needs of students' LSW progress and development. Families are invited to register for a free family account with ReThink Ed.  There you will find videos, activities, and additional LSW resources.  Enroll in our  Life Skills and Wellness Canvas Resources for Families and Students which offers activities and resources to support Life Skills and Wellness at home.
