Emergency Response Protocols - Plain Language Full Explanation

  • Broward County Public Schools, in conjunction with The I Love You Guys Foundation, will move to the use of the STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOL. The purpose of the transition to plain language is to ensure all internal and external communication between emergency responders is clearly understood.   


    HOLD - Purple Icon, in an emergency stay in your room, office or area  HOLD!
     In your room, office or area. Clear the halls.

     Occupants 

    • Clear the hallway and remain in room or area until the "All Clear" is announced.

     Staff

    • Account for occupants and staff
    • Do business as usual 

    SECURE - Blue Icon - Get inside. Lock outside doors  SECURE!
    Get Inside. Lock outside doors.

     Occupants 

    • Return inside
    • Do business as usual

     Staff

    • Bring everyone indoors
    • Lock outside doors
    • Increase situational awareness
    • Account for occupants and staff
    • Do business as usual 

    LOCKDOWN - Red Icon - Locks, lights, out of sight.  LOCKDOWN!

    • Move away from sight
    • Maintain silence
    • Do not open the door
    • Prepare to evade or defend

    • Notify if missing, extra, or injured people.

    • Tornado - Evacuate to shelter
    • Hazmat - Seal the room
    • Earthquake - Drop, cover, and hold
    • Tsunami - Get to high ground

    • Notify if missing, extra, or injured people.
