MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A STUDENT’S LIFE
Our members are making a difference in our public schools.
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has been awarded an AmeriCorps grant through the Florida Commission on Community Service dba Volunteer Florida, from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). This multi-year AmeriCorps grant was awarded to BCPS based upon a proposal to hire AmeriCorps members in evidence-based prevention, interventions and assistance to strengthen communities. Through the grant, BCPS is currently recruiting twenty-one (21) AmeriCorps Recovery Ambassadors positions. The AmeriCorps members will improve the academic success, disciplinary infractions, and absenteeism rates across district schools.BCPS will utilize the evidence-based Whole School Whole Child model to intervene with select students on an individual basis. AmeriCorps Members will collaborate, plan, and deliver direct services to select students one-on-one during non-instructional time, personalization periods, and afterschool in the areas of academic tutoring, emotional recovery services, wellness mindfulness, equity and family & community engagement at the following assigned seven public schools: Olsen MS, Westglades MS, Boyd Anderson HS, Deerfield Beach HS, Miramar HS, Northeast HS, and South Plantation HS.

Day of Service and Love
The AmeriCorps members will lead volunteers to participate in A Day of Service and Love, in commemoration of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. It will be a day to give back to the community in honor of the 17 students and staff who were lost and those who were injured.

Tutoring Support
Middle School 7th & 8th Grade
Members provide basic reading and math support to students in grades 7th & 8th who are below proficient in the subject.Our program has served at least 350 students each year. We currently provide our services Olsen and Westglades Middle Schools, and we plan to expand across Broward County Public Schools in the near future.
High School 9th Grade
Members provide basic reading and math support to students in 9th grade who are below proficient in the subject. Our program has served at least 350 students each year. We currently provide our services Deerfield Beach, Northeast, Boyd Anderson, South Plantation and Miramar High Schools, and we plan to expand across Broward County Public Schools in the near future. -
Recovery Support
BCPS has an active partnership with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM). Mind-Body skills small groups provide students with practical instruction in and scientific evidence for a variety of techniques that reduce stress, promote self-awareness and self-expression, facilitate imaginative solutions to personal and academic problems, foster mutual understanding among students, and enhance confidence. The BCPS will utilize the evidence-based comprehensive model. AmeriCorps members will provide mind-body wellness services to students selected during noninstructional time and personalization periods. Activities will center on mindfulness, meditation, and wellness walks. AmeriCorps members will not make formal decisions, provide formal counseling, or replace professional services in BCPS. AmeriCorps members will collaborate, plan, and/or deliver direct services to students during non-contract hours and personalization periods for 8 one-hour sessions. AmeriCorps members in partnership with BCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement will extend work being done with students into the community by facilitating four (4) community workshops. Workshops will share CMBM strategies with families and community members. These efforts support students' practice of new skills in the out-of-school setting
Members will mentor students in collaborate with school staff to help increase student engagement and improve attendance for middle & high school students. Members will be trained and will receive on-going technical assistance to ensure fidelity of the Whole School Whole Child model and to maintain best practices with students and staff.
