What are the Magnet Tracks offered at SLMS?
Posted by:We provide three tracks at SLMS: STEM Science, STEM Engineering, and STEM Computer/Business Systems. Each one of the tracks culminates in a high school level course, or capstone course, in the 8th Grade year. For science, it is Forensic Science, a high school level elective. For the Computer/Business track, the 8th grade course, Introduction to Information Technology, fulfills a high school level computer course on digital information technology that is a pre-requisite credit and offer the student the opportunity to become certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist. The engineering capstone course, Introduction to Engineering, fulfills the high school level pre-requisite course necessary to move into higher level engineering studies.

Is my child eligible for Silver Lakes Magnet Middle School?
Posted by:All middle students are eligible to attend SLMS. However, Broward County Public Schools offers a limited transportation zone for the STEM Magnet program. The Silver Lakes Transportation Zone can be found here: https://www.browardschools.com/cms/lib/FL01803656/Centricity/Domain/13492/STEM_SilverLakes.jpg
Transportation is also restricted to students that live two-miles or further from Silver Lakes.

What if I live outside the Transportation Zone? Can my child still apply to the Magnet Program?
Posted by:Broward County Schools provide on-campus supervision 30-minutes before and after school. (8:45 AM until 4:15 PM). After those times, supervision is provided for after-school clubs and athletics only. Silver Lakes Middle School does have a FREE, on-campus after-care program, OIC, that accepts applications at the beginning of the school year. Another option is after-care through the Boys and Girls Club of North Lauderdale. http://www.bgcbc.org/find-a-club. Our local Boys and Girls Club is less than a quarter mile from Silver Lakes Middle.

What if I move during the school year? Will my child still receive transportation?
Posted by:Unfortunately, if you move out of the transportation zone, the District will not provide transportation. If you move within the transportation zone during the school year, then the District can provide transportation if there are available seats on already existing bus routes.

What’s the difference between a Magnet Application and a Re-Assignment?
Posted by:A Magnet Application is to secure a Magnet seat for your child, while a re-assignment secures your child a seat at the school. Magnet Students are eligible to receive district transportation – re-assignment students are not. Re-assignments are normally performed when a parent wants their child to attend a specific school. At SLMS, this distinction does not apply for anything other than record-keeping; ALL SLMS students are expected to take magnet classes in one, or all, of our Magnet tracks. ALL SLMS students are considered Magnet Students.
