Report an Absence Online

According to SBBC Policy 5.5, All students under 16 must attend school every day of the 180-day school year. Absences are established by tardiness, early sign-outs, or absences for all or part of any day. The maximum number of acceptable absences is 5 days. Additionally, please note that students may not be released after 1:45 p.m.

1. Parents have 2 days (48 hours) to report an absence.
2. The Attendance Policy allows eight (8) reasons for absence to be excused.

Arrival

• Student arrival begins at 8:45 a.m. Breakfast is available in the cafeteria FREE to all students daily.
• Bus riders are dropped off and dismissed on the NORTH SIDE of the school (Tam O'Shanter Blvd, in front of the school).
• Parent Drop Off and Pick Up will take place in the west car loop (west side of school) off Hampton Blvd.
  
  Silver Lakes has two bike racks on the East and West side of the school for student use.

Tardy

Are you late for school?
Students arriving after 9:15 am will be considered TARDY. If students arrive after 8:45 am, the student will need to obtain a pass from the student center to be admitted to class. 

• Tardiness is disruptive to the learning environment and can have a negative impact on student achievement.  Tardiness may also count toward establishing a pattern of non-attendance that may indicate early signs of truancy. A pattern of non-attendance may be established by an accumulation of tardiness, absences (excused and unexcused), and early sign-outs that exceed five (5) days in a marking period or ten (10) days in two (2) marking periods.
• A tardy is excused for the same reasons that an absence is excused.  Excused absences/tardiness include illness, illness of an immediate family member, death in the family, religious holidays of the student's faith, required court appearance or subpoena by a law enforcement agency, special event, scheduled doctor or dentist appointments, or communicable disease.  In extenuating circumstances, principals and/or their designees may also excuse a tardy for reasons other than those stated if documentation is provided.  Parents must follow the same process to excuse a tardy as they do to excuse an absence.
• Tardiness is defined as a student not being in the classroom when classes are scheduled to begin.  A student who has an excused tardy (note or telephone call) should report directly to class after first checking in at the designated check-in area of the school.
• Excessive tardiness will be addressed on a case-by-case basis to determine if there is a pattern of non-attendance.
• Tardiness to any class without documentation may be considered unexcused.

Dismissal

• All perimeter gates, except for the front gate on Tam O’Shanter will be LOCKED at 9:10 a.m.
  
• You will be asked to present a government ID to gain access to the campus and you will need that ID once again in the single point entry office.
  
  
• Once again, IDs will be required. Students cannot be signed out after 3:15 pm.

Student Supervision:

• Student supervision is provided on campus from 8:45 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.
  
• There is NO STUDENT SUPERVISION before or after these designated times.
  
• All students MUST be picked up by 4:15 p.m. daily.
  
• Silver Lakes Middle School offers a Free AFTERCARE program through OIC of South Florida. To register, please attend the orientation, the open house or go into the parent center for information and registration packets.
  
• Students cannot enter the campus until 8:45 a.m. The drop-off is via the west car loop.
  
• Aftercare is provided by OIC of South Florida from 4:00 – 6:15 p. m. Parents MUST be ON TIME to pick up students from the Aftercare program. Pick-up will be in the front car loop beginning at 6:00 p.m. Rule infractions will result in dismissal from the aftercare program.
  
• Only students participating in pre-approved, adult-supervised activities and sports will be allowed to come to school early and/or stay after school for scheduled events, such as practices, meetings, and games.
  
  Proper Identification/Uniforms /ID Badges/Single Point Entry:
• All visitors to the campus MUST have a government ID to gain access and to sign out a student.
  
• Per District policy: All students, staff, and visitors MUST wear and display their assigned ID Badge while on campus. Replacement IDs for students are $2.00, and lanyards are $1.00.
  
• With the new security checkpoint system at the gates and in our parent center/single point entry, extended time will be necessary to process all requests. We appreciate your patience.
  
• We are a uniform school, and all students are expected to adhere to the uniform policy.

  Student Late and Early Dismissal / Access to the School During the
  Day:

Possession of a wireless communication device that disrupts the educational process is a violation. Cellular phones, camera phones, and pagers are prohibited at all times during class unless specifically instructed to do so as part of the lesson.

All Broward County Public Schools conduct regular exercises and drills at various times as outlined in the Florida Fire Code and Florida Administrative Code.

To aid in this process, every school has a designated SAFE team comprised of faculty and staff who have been specially trained on appropriate procedures to ensure every school follows safety protocol.

Discussion-based tabletop exercises are also conducted regularly with staff, faculty, and community partners, and the results of these exercises are documented and incorporated into school safety plans as necessary.  

All public schools are required to conduct one (1) fire drill per month with one (1) additional occurring within the first 30 days. Additionally, public schools are required to conduct, at a minimum, six (6) emergency drills every school year that are nonconcurrent with fire drills. One emergency drill must take place within the first ten (10) days of the beginning of the school year, and the remaining drills may not occur more than forty-five (45) days apart. Four (4) of the six (6) emergency drills must address active threats. The remaining two (2) drills must address other emergency events, such as severe weather, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, or reunification.

Students are expected to fully participate in drills and follow the directions of faculty and staff.

Visitor Parking

All visitors must park in the designated visitor parking spaces. Please do not park in spaces designated for faculty and staff or in the bus loop. 

All visitors including parents must check into the attendance office prior to going to any classrooms or any area on campus. An official photo identification (ID) is required. Acceptable forms of ID include the following:

• Driver’s license
• Florida’s official state identification card
• Passport

Controlling School Traffic is Essential for Safety

Students should be picked up and dropped off on the WEST side of the school in the car loop only. Parents wishing to park and come inside the school must come into the gate on Tam O'Shanter Blvd and park and come into the single point of entry. 

No students are allowed on campus before 8:30 am.
